Thread a size 22 crewel needle with Appleton wool, the length of your forearm. Make a knot in the end and do two tiny running stitches. Come up on the front of your fabric

Pull the knotted end's tail up firmly, slide your embroidery scissors underneath and snip off.

Your yarn is now secure. Cast on where you are able to cover it up later with embroidery.
