Witness

This work shares the story of a lifelong navigation of multiple belief systems and a fascination with the principles that connect them.

I chose the shrine form as a site of focus, care, and meaning. A mirror replaces any sacred image, bearing the phrase, “Do as you would be done by,” placing responsibility with the viewer rather than offering instruction.

The inclusion of a working compass suggests moral direction as something lived and negotiated. The goldwork wings and stumpwork plants suggest ongoing improvement rather than fixed judgement, while the mirror and open doors make the viewer feel welcomed, feel seen.

Embroidery Techniques:

Goldwork, stumpwork, needlelace, Opus Anglicanum, Underside couching, boxwork (fabric covered boards)

Winner Hand Embroidery Runner Up

This work adopts the form of a shrine drawn from multiple devotional traditions. Through goldwork structure and sculptural stitch, ornament becomes ethical measure, reflected back onto the viewer.
